iFani Reflects on Family Betrayal and the Hardships of His Career Hiatus
South African hip-hop artist iFani has shared a candid look into the harsh realities he encountered after stepping away from the limelight. His reflection reveals a challenging journey marked by shattered expectations, family betrayal, and the grueling process of rebuilding a career within the competitive music industry.
In a recent discussion, the rapper described how the support system he believed he had established for himself during his peak years quickly dissolved. “At first I thought I had backup,” iFani explained. “I thought I could go back to family, and family would take care of me like I took care of them when things were up.”

The artist, who rose to prominence in the early 2010s with high-energy hits such as “I’m the Best” and “Ewe,” was once a dominant figure in the South African urban music scene. During his most prosperous years, he was known for his flamboyant style and his commitment to supporting his extended family. However, as the spotlight faded and financial pressures mounted, he found that the support he once provided was not reciprocated.
“And then later on things changed, they flipped,” he noted, “and there were like, ‘no, we can’t handle this anymore.'”
iFani’s experience highlights the isolation often faced by entertainers when their commercial momentum slows. What was intended to be a temporary retreat from the industry evolved into a prolonged period of uncertainty. He described his return to music as “a long walk,” noting that re-entering a scene now dominated by Amapiano, TikTok trends, and streaming-era dynamics has proven significantly more difficult than his initial breakthrough.
Despite these emotional and practical hurdles, the artist remains focused on his comeback, acknowledging that the process of reclaiming his place in the industry carries a weight that goes far beyond the music itself.
