Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s ‘Luther’ Video Gives All the Feels

No teasing, no countdowns, just a random drop from Kendrick Lamar on a Friday afternoon. The West Coast MC brings the romance and rhythm in the new music video for “Luther,” his hit song with SZA.
Romance Is Back Thanks to Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “Luther” Video
Around 12 p.m. on Friday (April 11), K-Dot tweeted the song title and the link to the visual—the simple M.O. the rapper usually follows when dropping a new release. The “Luther” video offers a sense of nostalgia and romance as the late, legendary singer Luther Vandross’ “If This World Were Mine” with Cheryl Lynn decorates the track while K-Dot and SZA cozy up to their respective lovers. The two longtime collaborators might just fix your trust issues with the video after seeing the sparks fly throughout this one.
The Karena Evans-directed video plays out from two sides: Kendrick with his lady and SZA caressing her boo. The empowering lyrics support all the chemistry and connection going on. “If this world was mine, I’d take your dreams and make ’em multiply/If this world was mine, I’d take your enemies in front of God/Introduce ’em to that light, hit them strictly with that fire/Fah-fah, fah-fah-fah, fah-fah, fah,” K-Dot raps.
The cinematography captured in the five-minute storyline brings architecture and everyday spaces to life through bold colors and black-and-white scenes. SZA walks through an ivory-coated corridor to find her man and struts across a concrete structure as she sings, “I might even settle down for you, I’ma show you I’m a pro/I’ma take my time and turn it off/Just so I can turn you on, baby,” an elevator scene plays more of “If This World Were Mine” as K-Dot’s partner travels to another floor and Kendrick dances in front of his classic GNX draped in a red cloth and throws dice in a bedroom.
Longing and lust hit deep for all these ’ships while love is in the air.
Kendrick and SZA will surely perform “Luther” on their Grand National Tour, kicking off next week on April 19 in Minneapolis. They’ll be traveling throughout the U.S. and Europe from spring to summer when the trek ends Aug. 9 in Sweden. With the release of the “Luther” video today, the track could extend its stay at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for another week. It’s already locked in a seven-week streak at No. 1. A lucky feeling heading into tour. Dot dropped the song last November when he released his GNX album, and it’s been going up ever since.
