Kindlynxsh Finds Catharsis in Reimagining Oliver Mtukudzi’s ‘Todii’

In a recent appearance on YFM’s The Agenda with Roiii and DJ Sliqe, rising artist Kindlynxsh opened up about the profound emotional significance of his latest single, Todii. The track serves as a respectful, contemporary reimagining of the timeless classic by the late Zimbabwean icon, Oliver Mtukudzi.

For Kindlynxsh, the connection to the song is rooted in his upbringing. “First off, first and foremost, my parents played it all the time when I was a kid,” he shared during the interview. What began as a nostalgic nod to his childhood quickly evolved into a deeper exploration of his musical identity. He noted that Todii ranks among his all-time favorite African compositions, second only to Mtukudzi’s Neria—a track he hopes to sample in the future.

The Zimbabwean-born legend, affectionately known as Tuku, remains a cornerstone of Kindlynxsh’s artistic foundation. “I’ve always loved the artist. That’s the only person I knew even from Zim,” he explained, highlighting how his parents introduced him to the cultural weight of Mtukudzi’s work. Beyond mere admiration, the decision to sample Todii became a vehicle for personal catharsis. Kindlynxsh revealed that he reached a pivotal moment in his life where he needed to address unresolved family matters.

“I’m at a point, there’s some things I want to get off my chest, something about my family. I want to go to Zim and document it. Damn, why not this beautiful sample that is so respected? Let me try to do it in my best way.”

By reimagining Todii, Kindlynxsh has crafted more than a simple cover; he has built a bridge between his South African reality, his Zimbabwean heritage, and the emotional weight he is ready to release.
