Roiii Calls for Greater Unity Among Pitori Rappers, Citing Durban as a Blueprint
A powerful call for unity is echoing through South African hip-hop after Pretoria rapper Roiii challenged artists to rethink how they move across city lines, pointing to Durban’s tight-knit scene as the blueprint for collective success.

Speaking candidly about the state of the culture, Roiii highlighted what he sees as a significant gap in Pretoria’s approach to industry growth. “We don’t have unity as much as the Durban broers do,” he noted. “And it’s really dope to see you guys bring broers in also from Durban, because this is highlighting what we want the culture to look like.”
His remarks reflect the perspective of an artist deeply rooted in Pitori’s evolving sound. Known for its raw storytelling and distinctive Spitori flavour, the Pretoria hip-hop scene has long produced standout talent. Still, it has at times struggled to build the same tightly connected ecosystem that has become the signature of the Durban music scene. Durban has built a reputation for moving as a unit; from emerging acts to established names, the city’s artists frequently collaborate, co-sign each other, and push a shared agenda that amplifies their collective reach.
For Roiii, that model offers a clear path forward for his peers. “So, if I’m a broer that comes from Pitori, why not tap in with Day Sound because it’s also working,” he added. “They’ve got their young movement going. As Pitori, I think that’s the first step. I’m fully for it.”
Roiii’s remarks point to a growing belief that the next leap for South African hip-hop may depend less on individual breakthroughs and more on intentional collaboration across cities. By building bridges with the Durban wave, Pretoria artists could expand their influence while successfully exporting their own unique sound and identity to a broader audience.
